Wordpress Vs Joomla

About a month ago I had a big dilemma, whether or not to use Joomla or Wordpress for this Blog. I have been using Joomla for the past three years. I have always believed Joomla can be customised to suit any website / web application which has led me today to share my experiences of Joomla and Wordpress
Joomla is arguably the best and most supported content management system on the market at the moment  and Wordpress, is the most frequently used Blog Content management system, so which one should you use.

Its important to note that Joomla is a fully fredged content management system while wordpress is specifically for blogs. Therefore depending on your requirements Joomla would be a good choice if you want to build a content rich, non blog website simply because you have more freedom to add as many modules and components as you like.  You can even download and install blog bodules and components to Joomla .Meanwhile wordpress has blog -specific plugins only.

The learning curve of Joomla is quite steep, considering it is a full CMS with a lot more features than Wordpress which you can setup and install within minutes. It takes a few seconds to download and install plugins and widgets. The backend of Wordpress looks straight foward.

For the three weeks that I have used wordpress compared with three years I have used Joomla I have so far appreciated the strength of wordpress interms of SEO.  Tags which accompany every article in wordpress tend to affect greatly their search engine ranking, the reason most probably why you have been directed to this website through a search engine. Joomla on the other hand inorder to archieve the same results you have to enter the tags as keywords which is not directly accessible from the content adding GUI.

Lastly Joomla chows a lot of system resources, more if you are even using the latest version(Joomla 1.5)  with a lot of modules and plugins. Wordpress on the other hand is very light  and comparison of the number of the core database tables between Joomla and wordpress tells the whole story

In short WordPress is simple, you can see it as a blog or as a regular website.  It has fixed pages, posts and categories.
Through the use of plugins you can extend its functionality and let it grow as big and complicated as you want while trenght is in complexity.  Deep level navigation, sections in sections, categories etc… It has fixed pages and posts, posts Great for community sites, you can create a regular site.
